by Jake Maguigad

It was a sizzling 39c Sunday, July 1st. Good enough reason to sought the cooling confines of the LS CDN gym and witness a sizzler of a better kind. The play-offs, the good games of the PBAM MASTERS CHALLENGE 2018.

This PBAM iconic Tournament, since 1995, which saw Mathew Wright of Mississauga, now a member of the Philippine team, win the MVP thrice and shoved out since 2014, is back.

Like the Phoenix, it stirred last year 2017 and now revived for another go of the old glory days. Stage managing this year are Jex and Bern Mendiola, with the assistance of Aaron Poonin.

OPEN DIVISION

With a complement of 8 teams in the Open Division (3 out of towners), 6 in the Masters and 3 in the 13, the games spelled relief to the scorching 39c.

In Saturdays qualifiers, 4 teams from the Open missed the cut, one of which was a youthful team from North York. Team making the cut were CHOSEN GEN, OTTAWA TITANS, LDV and LLAMADOS.

The Llamados eliminated the undermanned Ottawa Titans, LDV likewise to Chosen Gen A good match-up in the offing, Llamados (favorites in espanol) and LDV.

On hot perimeter shooting, connecting on 9 threes, a bruising defense, Jeremy Narciso, Tim Boayes lording the boards, LDV took double digit leads and a half time 12 point lead, 51-39. Which rattled Llamados Coach Wily Willy of why a better bench can not connect and gel.

On adjustments, a dogged defense, a fluid offence from Chris Rajamdraam, Gelo Eganas and beefed up by Jona Bermillo who played for Shanghai Kung Fu in Asia plus a fast tiring LDV five, Llamados went on a roll and never looked back, winning 86-76. It was a back to back Llamados title. MVP : Sobey Sultan

Defending Team Limuel, after struggling past All City 54-49, took on AK for the right to be called Numero Uno .

In a surprising close and clean setto, the game went down the wire 52-52, except Tanjo Narciso with a stellar interception was going for a clear breakaway ….. EXCEPT it was whistled down for a violation, oops!! On the return, Team Limuel sank in a winner twinner to break the deadlock and win 54-52.

THE U-11 MULTI-PALS

A unique Tournament, accepted and appreciated by the Teams invited: LAKERS (Karim Ladicani) Jeunesse CDN (Nathaniel Dinku), SBSC (Shawn Browne) PBAM (Boni Lingon).

The Multi-Pals are goodwill friendly games only, promoting Multi-cultural interaction. Fun and love for the game of basketball foremost, competition, secondary.

The Sporting event is a PBAM initiative endorsed by the Borough of CDN-NDG through the Direction de la Culture des Sports, des Loisirs et de Developpment Social.

To stress, no individual or team Awards were at stake. To make the afternoon worthwhile, a Basketball donated by birthday celebrant Marifi Bermudez, nee Baluyot, was up for grabs, by lot.

Btw, Shawn Browne SC took one from Nathan Dinku’s Jeunesse CDN, 36-29 and Karim Ladicani’s Lakers over Boni Lingon’s Royals, 35-33.

PBAM U-11, on the draw by lot, won the Basketball.
